u-H Ill ll Tummy QNDCE 81' SECRET NITE NOTE The South Atlantic Event The New Zealand scientific institute that earlier said that it had detected evidence in rain water of a nuclear explosion informed our Embassy in Wellington on November 16 that additional tests had cast considerable doubt on the yalidity of the earlier findings The institute is continuing its tests and has agreed to make available to the US some of the sample water so that we may do our own thyroid glands taken from sheep and calfs slaughtered in New Zealand after the September 22 event have been shipped to the University of Tennessee for analysis as part of a regular program of monitoring radioactive fallout This shipment has not yet been received but according to a New Zealand biochemist a similar shipment from Australia has been received by the university and analysis reveals no abnormal radioactivity We are now seeking to COnfirm this We are continuing to seek corroborating evidence from a variety of sources but thus far nothing substantial has been developed The panel of experts under Dr Press expects to con kpde its work in several weeks- x SECRET a2 9935
