Washington, D.C., June 28, 2024 – This week, Washingtonian magazine published a glowing profile of the National Security Archive, its executive director Tom Blanton, and the Archive’s decades-long effort “to help the public see the unredacted truth about our history.”
Characterizing the Archive as “ground zero for truly inside information,” the article walks through nearly 40 years of Archive history and highlights some of its most important victories, including major declassifications about “everything from the Cuban Missile Crisis to former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s transcribed telephone conversations.” A special “It Came from the Archive” section highlights declassified revelations about “Agent Elvis,” Area 51, and the highly sensitive issue of what sort of liquor Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet liked to drink.
The Washingtonian profile also celebrates the long and illustrious career of Tom Blanton, who has led the Archive with humor and grace since 1992.
